QSFP28 Fibre Optic Transceiver Technology Overview

QSFP28 (100G)

A QSFP28 is a Quad (4-channel) small form factor hot pluggable fibre optical transceiver used for 100 Gigabit Ethernet (100GbE) data communications applications.

The QSFP28 integrates 4 transmit and 4 receiver channels. The number 28 means each lane carries up to 28G data rate. QSFP28 supports 4x25G breakout connection, 2x50G breakout, or 1x100G depending on the type of QSFP28 transceiver used.

QSFP28 transceivers include SR4, LR4, IR4 PSM, CWDM4 and BiDi series.

    • Transmits over multimode (OM3 or OM4) at 850nm
    • Supports a distance of up to 70m, over OM3 and 100m over OM4
    • Transmits 4 x 25G channels using 8 fibre cores (4 duplex pairs) to with a total data rate of 100Gbps
    • Each 25G channel can be connected to a different switch enabling one 100G port to connect to up to 4 other 25G ports
