CFP Module Technology Overview

CFP Modules

The CFP or C form-factor pluggable, designed for optical networking applications are defined by CFP MSA and enable 40 Gbps, 100 Gbps and 400 Gbps applications.

CFP transceivers include pluggable CFP, CFP2, CFP4 and CFP8 transceiver modules.

Laser Class 1 IEC / CDRH compliant

Features

CFP (100G)

  • Designed after the Small Form-factor Pluggable transceiver (SFP) interface but is significantly larger to support 100Gbps
  • Electrical interface 10 x 10Gbps lanes in each direction (RX, TX)
  • The optical connection supports both 10 x 10Gbps and 4 x 25Gbps variants
  • Supports
    • a single 100Gbps signal such as 100GE or OTU4
    • one or more 40Gbps signals such as 40GE, OTU3

    • STM-256/OC-768
  • Common implementations include:
    • 100GBASE-SR10 CFP for 100m on multi-mode fibre cables

    • 100GBASE-LR10 CFP and 100GBASE-LR4 CFP for 10km via single-mode fibre cables

    • 100GBASE-ER10 CFP and 100GBASE-ER4 CFP for 40km on single-mode fibre cables

CFP2 (40G/100G)

  • Electrical Interface supports
    • 4 x 25 Gbit/s interfaces – allows for client specific specification
    • 10 x 10 Gbit/s

CFP4 (40G/100G)

  • Electrical Interface supports
    • 4 x 25 Gbit/s interfaces
    • 10 x 10 Gbit/s

CFP8 (400G)

CFP8 module delivers four times more bandwidth than earlier 100G solutions.

  • Electrical Interface supports
    • 16 x 25 Gbit/s interfaces
    • 8 x 50 Gbit/s
