WDM - Wavelength Division Multiplexing

WDM technology or Wavelength Division Multiplexing increases bandwidth by allowing different data streams in the form of light to be sent simultaneously over a single optical fibre network at different frequencies.

Using the analogy of a road network, instead of using a fibre optic cable as a “single lane road” WDM enables up to 80 light channels, each with a unique wavelength, to be sent simultaneously but independently like a multi lane highway. This eliminates the need for individual fibres for each data stream service.
